Wyatt wins the 2012 Sunnehanna Amateur

It was another great finish Sunday at Sunnehanna Country Club as it hosted the 59th annual Sunnehanna Amateur. The weather was perfect and the course dried out nicely making for an entertaining weekend. Alabama sophomore Bobby Wyatt shot a first round 65 and fought to the finish besting 54-hole leader Mike Miller by two shots and his fellow teammate Justin Thomas by 3 shots to win the 2012 Sunnehanna Amateur.

Wyatt took the lead on the back nine Sunday and sealed the deal on the 17th hole when he made a putt to extend his lead over former Penn State player Mike Miller. Miller tried making a late run on the back nine after shooting 3-over on the front nine but his run wouldn’t be enough as he finished the day at even par falling just two strokes short of the win.

Mexico’s Sebastian Vasquez held the lead for much of the front nine as Miller faltered early, but failed to continue his solid play into the back nine and eventually ended up shooting a final round 71, finishing 3 strokes short. Pennsylvania native Nicholas Reach also had a great front nine on Sunday as he climbed the leaderboard early with birdies at 3, 5 and 8 but he couldn’t keep the momentum going either as he made a few late bogies to eventually finish 3 strokes behind Wyatt.

Defending champion Nathan Smith shot a second round 65 on Friday, and looked poised to make his signature weekend run, but a first round 74 and rounds of 72-73 on the weekend were enough to keep him off of the leaderboard on Sunday. Prior to winning the tournament last year, Smith finished in the top 5 the previous 4 years, a feat that no other Sunnehanna Amateur contestant has accomplished.

Wyatt’s win will guarantee him an invitation back to Sunnehanna for as long as he stays amateur, and the the top 5 finishers will automatically receive an invitation to next year’s tournament to have another shot at winning one of amateur golf’s premier events. Here is a look at who rounded out the top 5:
